conclusion: the extent of the 'extensions of man' (12/11)
There were many things to learn, which will be very useful for me to know in my future career as a media artist.
I was very happy to attend this lecture.
As our last class went on, Professor Yoon explained all over which we have learned.
We talked about some people. Mc Luhan, Williams, Vilem flusser, Bruno Latour, Paul Virilio, and so on.
They all had their different ideas on media. There isn't an exact answer of what media is but by learning there thoughts, we can expand our thinkings about media.
My thought of media is.. with what I have learned in this class is that media keep on changing in both useful ways as well as creating uncomfortable things too in some way. Still it will develop for our needs which will never change.
Media is also a medium to communicate. Also it is used for art too. It have various kinds of media. They all will someday contribute to our well being life.
I, in the future will be one man who will influence in this part, and I really thank Professor Yoon for this class. Thank you!

The many virtues of Sant McLuhan (12/6)
Aristotle said that "The idea that tells are extensions of soul and body(Body is the soul's matural too.)" We can give slave and the master for an example. With out soul, we can't move our body. The core of idea is that instruments extend the functions of the lobouring body.
Marx said that "It is a productions of Human industry" Such as railways, electric machines..
Kapp sees technology as a form of 'organ projection', by comparing human organ with technology. Such as, telegraphics=nerve system, railways=circulatory system.
Bergson said "If our organs are matural instruments, our instruments must then be artifical organs." For instance, a fake leg last much long than the real leg.
Well.. all of these are their point of view. I think they all are reasonable. They also studied more than me. But the reason why they have a different thoughts is that the environment surrounding them were different. That might brought up all those different ideas. My idea is a little close to Kapp's.
In environmental thesis, by this we can do lot more than that we can do. A good example for this is 'Robocop.' It can do many police works that real human police officers can't do.
In real world we can find out many things like this. Internet allows us to not be in like while we register some things in off-line. We can watch TV anywhere with the help of the cell phone.
There is anti-content thesis. This says "The medium is the message." This means that societies have always been shaped more by nature of the media by which men communicate than by content of communication.
I think this is very interesting point. Sould we focus the contents on the medium? Or should we focus medium on content?
Well.. I think it really depends on the situation. I think if the content is a reall good, we should focus on the contents and put the medium so that we can actualize the content. If the medium is so good(a well developed technology), we should think what kind of content we could put on.
Mapping Marshall McLuhan and Williams (12/4)
First, messages were delivered by primitive oral culture. Next, by literate culture. After, Mechanical printing, and now by electric media.
These were changed due to a technology development. And I think also, by people's need. Just by a literate way, we couldn't express a message effectively. Like when we say "I love you!" It can really mean that I love you, but I also can mean I don't love you, when it is pronounced differently. Anyway, later mechanical printing was developed. This is like 'pal man dae jang kyung'. By this we could print out a lot at once. Now there is an electric media to send messages, like web, cell phones, and etc.
The important thing is that, while delevering a message it could be changed. Like when Korea didn't have a skill to make our own money, we had to send the picture to another country to make it. For example, when we sent a picture of 'King Sae Jong', they couldn't make it exactly. When it first came to drawer's hand, he changed a little bit, and sent to a draftman. The draftman also changed as his way. He cut of what he thought it was not needed. Next carvler carved in his way as he used to do. When the print came out, it was quite different compared to the original. It looked more like a foriegner.
For another example, 'Story Chun Hang', which we can say it is in a small group have changed into many similar stories, like 'chun hang duen', etc.
Many media contents can be changed or translated to other media. This is why story telling came out.
If we see above, we just can't say that the changes of the message is really bad for us. Changed messages could be distracting to us, but on the other hand it makes a lot of fun stories. So it is important to figure out on which occasion is good and bad.

New media : Determining or determined? (11/29)
We have discussed this problem by talking about Mc Luhan and Williams. Also by talking about centeral culture and popular culture.
McLuhan said that new media change everything. On the other hand Williams said that medium is a part of our culture, and it includes socual processes.
I think it is just a way of thinking. It is very similar to the phrase, 'Is egg first or a chicken first?' That's because new media can change everything with it's new technologies, and also we can think that those new media(new technologies) is brought up in our culture. If we see TV as an example, we can ask... is TV made up as a part of our culture? or did TV changed our life style and our culture? This, we should ask to the person who developed the TV.
Again, centeral culture and popular culture.
Centeral culture is enjoyed by only few person, like classic, oppera, etc. This have a history, and contain a lot of studies and researches. We also call this a high art.
Popular culture is a culture which is popular to us. TV shows could be an example, and this have no historical background. To make popular culture to centeral culture, we have to research many things and study, so that it can have a historical background. Many proffessors and students are doing this works.
Prof. Yoon said arts like pictures are considered as a centeral culture, but media artrs like interactive arts are not considered as a centeral culture. That's because arts like pictures have a long histories, but media arts doesn't. But I'm sure media arts will become a centeral culture soon, because technologies are developing and things are changing very rapidly in this century.
the return of the Frankfurt school critique in the popularisation of new media & conclusion (11/27)
One is to reflect the traditional to make a new thing. This can be thought as paintings like Picasso, and so on. these paintings are not a new way. They just followed the traditional ways to paint.
But on the other hand, there is a way to create new by not reflecting the traditional. By just combining many new things, it create another new thing. By this we can get various of new things than before.
I also have learned that the politicans used media to scatter people's concentrations. For example, in Korea, Jeon Doo Hyun used 3S( sport, sex, screen) to scatter people's concentrations. So I can say media is a very powerful weapon.
Who was dissatisfied with old media? (11/20)
Well.. not exactly until the new media came out. For example, when TV was there with no other new media, it itself was very interesting and new.
As time passed, many new media have been developed with new technologies. Such as video player, and after DVD player came out. Many new media comes out due to the dissatisfings of the media before. That's why media keep on developing.
As a conclusion, I think rather saying that we are dissatisfied with the old media, it is more wright to say we want new functions in the media as technologies develop.
the return of the middle ages and other media archaeologies(11/13) / a sense of deja vu & conclusion (11/15)
Dejavu is a situation which you think it really happened just like it happened in your dream.
I had many dejavus. There were many situations which exactly happened just as in my dream. When I was in India, I was lying down on a bed, and the telephone rang. That was exactly same with my dream when I was in Korea. So I thought it was some kind of prediction that I will go to India. There are many other dejavus which I have experienced, and it is always a strange and new sensation to me.

New media and the modernist concept of progress (11/8)
We can give Picasso as an example for a modernist, and Duchamp for an avant-garde.
Mordenists respect the traditional. Like Picasso, and other artists drew with a brush on a paper with his own way. They respected the traditional way.
On the other hand, Duchamp completely ignored the traditional way. He just put the stool chair in his exhibition.
This is the example of the difference between mordenist and avant-garde.
There is a pictorialist. When photography first came out, the artists were afraid of losing their jobs. But it didn't happen the way they thought. There were many differences between photographs and pictures. People also prefered pictures. So pictorialists came out. They are the people who take a photographs like as if it is a picture.
Well.. there are many technologies developed to make photographs look more like a pictures. Such as photoshop, illustrator, and etc. But I think if you want a real image, use a photograph. If you want something that look more like picture, use drawing. It is best to use either way in specific occasion, since they both have many differences, and good/bad points.
Introduction, Measuring 'newness' & Prof. Roger Palmer's lecture(10/30, 11/1)
We've talked about 'Old media in new times.'
There are many things which are old media in these days.
As said in class, TV also is an old media. But it just changed into a digital TV which actually is a same meaning, but just a technological change inside.
We can see mobile phone as an example too. That's because, it evolved from big house phones.
Old media kept on changing in new forms based on the original form. Even though it kept on changing, the basic needs will not change.
I bet there are many more old media these days around us, but we just can't recognize, since we are not aware of it.
In my opinion, the changings of old media is reasonable. It's because it is based on our basic needs when it was first made, but just adding more of our needs into it.
In Prof. Roger Palner's lecture, well.. it was a interesting but somehow difficult lecture, he had talked on the cultural (mis)understanding through photographs.
I too agree with his words. When I see a photograph, I don't know what it actually means. I just understand with what I know. Since the photograph(media) reflects authur's point of view, it is somehow impossible to exactly understand what the author thinks.
If you see his photographs, you could see that all of the photographs were taken in normal places which gives you a slight allusion. There were only photos and the region names where the photos were taken.
He wanted the audiences to focus on the relationships between the place and the photo. Also there were some different ways when he took the photographs. The one I can remember is that, he took photographs infront of the surrounding frame.
To wrap up, the lecture was interesting and I look forward to see his exibitions in Korea someday.

Cyberspace (10/25)
It was quite interesting to think about the cyberspace because we are living in cyberspace.
The VR can be seen as two ways, 'sensory' and 'connentivity.'
You can think of 'sensory' as an experience. Such as virtual tennis game. We play with a racket without a ball and court, but we can see ourself in a screen playing just like as if we are playing in a real court.
'Connectivity' is a little different. This is an another world in a network space. It give us another big world similiar to the real world. If we are in a chatting room or in a mini hompage, such as cyworld, we embody our self to things like avatar or to our ID. In this way we go into the new world.
I don't know how these VR s will interact with the real world and with many other people but it is sure that it allow us to live in a new world.

Dispersal. (10/11)
They have a different meanings.. Dispersal is like every body is distributing.. Such as you-tube. Whoever upload their media files makes a dispersal because it is showing his/her files to anybody, and those people can scrap the files as well.
On the other hand, distribution is a way to send or deliver to many other people from one point. Radio, TV(kbs, sbs, mbc), etc.. could be an example.
I think both distributions and dispersals are an important source.
With distributions we can make dispersals as well as the oposite.
By these technologies it makes prosumers(producer + consumer).

Distinguishing between kinds of new media. (10/2)
How can we distinguish a new media?
Well.. We have learned a lot about new media through previous classes.
With comparing to pictures, games, technology, etc..
In class the new media can be distinguished as a new kinds of genre, new ways of representing the world, new texturial experience, computer-mediated communications, subjectivity, distributing & consuming, etc..
For example, how can a new media represent a world as a new way?
If we go to the game room, we can see a person playing a car game thinking as if he is in the car. Also photographs, drawings, sculptures can represent the world.
MUD game could be a good example for new texturial experience.
In distributing & consuming, there are many programs used around us.
Pruna, e-donkey could be the most familiar programs to us.
Also there are many distributing & consuming systems(programs). Such as RPDS(result printing & distributing system) which distributes many kinds of results(sports results, informations, news, etc) to the customers(news paper company, homepage, broadsystem station, etc..) in real time.
I think the new media can also be for smell, taste, hearing, (sense of) touch, etc..
We could represent the world, communicate by sharing these media too.

New Media : Non-technical, inclusive (9/27)
Digital, digitalized things produce images. They can be divided in to two. Visionary image(physical), and sensory image(non-physical). Visoinary image is a picture. Just physicaly. It is just what we see with our eyes, not with our thoughts. On the other hand sensory image is a image looking with our head.
Similiar to this, there is pure medium and intermedium. The pure medium is a pure medium as it says. It dosen't have a meaning on it. But intermedium, where inter is similiar to new, have a meaning on it.
For instance, a music which is just a music having no meanings on it can be turned to intermedium when people use it by giving a meaning on it.
Also I think the medium can be seen as both pure and inter medium with just a change of thoughts. TV can be seen as a pure medium. But it can be many other different inter medium. Some people could think TV is for entertainment, while some other people think it is for education. With a different thoughts a same medium can be seen as different intermedium.
It's just my thought about todays class..

What is "New Media"?! (9/20)
There are many ways to approach to the word 'new'.
But this time in class the word 'new' meant 'better', with the help of technology.
The high developed technology made the world horizental.
Such as internet, computer, programing..
Internet made us a chance to communicate with the people all over the world.
When I was a child, when living abroad having many foriegn freinds, I couldn't get in contect with them, when I came back to my country.
But if I could had used the internet I might be in contect with them.
Also by internet the horizen was made in education. Many students could study by internet. For example, Megastudy.
By development of computer and programing, there became horizental between artist and engineer.
We saw a video, 'da Vinci project'. It was about the collapse between the artist and the engineer.
With the use of computer and programming the artist began to make arts more technogically. Not just drawing a picture, or making a sculpture, they use computers and make much more sets of arts.
When I first came into this university.. majoring Media, I didn't know why we had to study art and computer programming. I just felt that I couldn't be experts in both things because there are peolpe who are majoring arts, and people who are majoring computer sciences.
Before I felt the two as a seperate things. But now I found out by studying arts and computers, I can produce 'new things'!!!
We always try to make and find new. Now I'm begining to think about new. What new is and how to approach to the 'new'.

Is art important? What is art? (9/11)
Is art important? What is art eventually?
If you look up a dictionary you can find out the 'aesthetics' means a branch of philosophy concerned with the study of the idea of beauty.
Well.. I think art is a way to express one's feeling as well as to communicate with others.
Whether the art is shown as a western way or in an asian way, art tells person's thoughts, feelings, and what he/she have experienced and learned(these can be effected by the environments around us).
The base of the aesthetics these days is westernized.
But I think it is not so important whether it is in western or in asian. They both have the same point in some how. They both are a way to express and to communicate.
Once, in a 'media communicating' class a professor gave each team a picture and told us to wright down what we see and wright down how the person in the picture feels. There were many differnet answers even though it was a same picture.
Which means everyone have different thoughts and feelings which leads to have different communication with art. Also the artist might have had different thought with us too.
This winter I have been to many art museums. There were many pictures. I didn't know what the pictures meant. I as well as my friend had our own thoughts and feelings while looking at the pictures. But later listening to the explaination of the picture mostly it was totally different. Also I and my friend had different communication with the pictures.
So I think for the artist, art is a way to express his/her thinkings and feelings. And for the person who sees the art, it is a way to communicate with the artist and to think about his/her feeling.
The main idea of art in western and eastern is same but just have a differnet style. So nobody can say western art is better or eastern art is better.
Art it self have it's own philosophy and aesthetics.
With that we can communicate.
I can say art is one of the media.
